I paint primarily from life. This is an important part of my work. I think painting is an attempt to capture a human experience.  I think the image becomes an interaction of both the visible and the psychological. I want my paintings to suggest something of the layers of being human, just standing there; looking, thinking and feeling.

I like painting landscapes because they are forever changing, they are metaphors for moods and feelings. They give a sense of place and belonging. They are to me evocative of our identities, our memories, they give us the sense of who we are.

Composition, colour, tone mark making and all the other painterly considerations are important to me. The painting must function as an interesting painting and as such, an interesting dialogue with a viewer. I try to make decisions that lead to a painting that says something. That speaks to people.
